Undergraduate Courses

UIE203: Introduction to Urban Planning (도시계획개론)

The goal of this course is to introduce various theories, issues, models, and approaches in urban planning. This course is designed to explore the basis of the comprehensive plan, the process of its development, and the means by which it is implemented. We examine land use, transportation, economic analysis, housing, urban design, and how these various fields of planning is put together and shape contemporary cities. Urban planning regulations and laws in Korea is not the main subject of this class. Rather I intend to provide a working knowledge of the variety of applications in the planning field.

UIE210: Geographic Information System (지리정보시스템)

The course intends to provide sufficiently broad coverage of GIS topics so that students will feel comfortable with the most common functions of GIS and spatial analysis, and will also be comfortable using GIS software. The class time will be divided into lecture and laboratory sessions which cover both theory and practice of topics of interest. By the end of the class all students should be very familiar with almost all of ArcGIS’s core functionality. This course also looks at how to make GIS useful to urban planners – this means that a large part of the class focuses on the tasks that urban planners will face.

UDE301: Transportation Planning (교통계획)

This course in transportation planning provides a broad overview of the field and is intended for students intending to concentrate in transportation planning or those who want a broad overview of the field. At the end of this course, you will be able to perform analyses common in the practice of transportation planning, including parking and travel demand analysis, traffic impact assessment. Furthermore, you will be able to discuss key policy issues in current transportation planning debates.

UIE405: Urban Design (도시설계)

The goal of this course is to introduce theoretical background and practices associated to the design of cities. The subjects of the class are important elements of the city constructing our physical environment. The main focus of the class is toward; First, by reading materials regarding urban design theories and history, students will understand the important design principles for making good urban environment. Second, through practice of urban design techniques, student will learn how those principles can be implemented in urban design projects.

Graduate Courses

UIE505: Research Methods for Urban Studies (도시연구방법론)

The purposes of this course are to develop understanding and skill in the design of empirical research used in the analysis of urban problems, as well as to develop the ability to quantitatively analyze empirical data. The first half of the course will emphasize choosing the appropriate research design for given classes of planning problems.The logic of the research process and its constituent elements will be emphasized. The last half of the course will focus on advanced data analysis methods widely used in urban studies.

UIE707: Planning Theory (계획이론)

This course will review and critically evaluate the various epistemological, methodological, and normative foundations of planning thought and practice. It will also examine some of the contemporary debates in the planning theory literature. The course is meant to (1) provide the necessary background and foundations for students wishing to make scholarly contributions to the planning theory literature and (2) help students uncover imbedded planning-theoretic issues in their policy-oriented research
